Sometimes adventure is just around the corner, and you only need to slow down long enough to notice it. Ruiru Twiga Dam is one of those places. Less than an hour from Nairobi, it offers a quiet escape, a scenic boat ride, and a shoreline full of surprises.
We went expecting a simple afternoon on the water. What we found was a cluster of lakeside spots, each with its own mood — lively, calm, social, scenic. Seeing them from the boat felt like flipping through the pages of a story I didn’t know existed.
Starting at Utopia: The Familiar
Our day began at Utopia Resort, a place I already knew because we had celebrated my birthday there. But this story isn’t about Utopia. It’s about what we discovered when we left the shore and started moving clockwise around the dam.
From the water, Utopia becomes just the starting point — the beginning of a gentle journey that shows you a different side of this area.
The Calm of Being on Water
There’s something special about a boat ride. The air is quieter, the view is wide, and time feels slower. Birds glide overhead, ripples dance along the surface, and the shoreline reveals itself in layers.
As we drifted, we noticed places we had never heard about, even though they sit so close together. It made us wonder how many beautiful spots exist just out of sight because we never take the slow route.
The Waterfront Stops – Clockwise Around the Dam
Here’s what we saw, in order, all from the water:

Teliza — calm and scenic. A quiet stretch with trees and simple charm.
Twiga Beach Resort — lively and social, the kind of place where groups gather and music feels natural.
The Zocalo — more curated and stylish. Romantic, even. It looks like a place for slow meals and shared views.
Advabliss Resort — family-friendly and relaxed. Open spaces and an easy pace.
Safariland Twiga Resort — friendly and social, with people chatting, laughing, and enjoying the shoreline.
Courtesy Beach Resort — simple and tidy. A steady place to sit and watch the dam.
Rock Beach Resort — lively again, with a beach-energy feel. Fun and social.
Hotel Vesloni — quieter. Classic. Perfect for slow meals and long views.
Tropical Gardens — nature-forward. Green, shaded, refreshing.Flogarden Resort — open and family-oriented. Peaceful and welcoming.
Serene Gardens — still, quiet, and living up to its name, a soft pause before returning to Utopia.
From the boat, none of these places are competing. They simply exist along the water, each with its own rhythm.
Why This Experience Stood Out
Before this trip, I only knew Utopia. It dominated social media when we searched for places to spend time by the water. But seeing the dam from the boat changed everything.
There are so many different places clustered along the same shoreline, with different moods:
lively and youthful
quiet and scenic
romantic
family-friendly
green and garden-loving
If one spot is full, noisy, or not your vibe, there are others just a few minutes away — all sharing the same lake.
It’s like discovering a neighbourhood you never knew existed.

Final Thoughts: Slow Down to See
This boat ride reminded me of something important:
Sometimes we only see what’s advertised. The loudest option. The one that shows up on social media first. But when you slow down, take the quiet route, and look from a different angle, you discover so much more.
Ruiru Twiga Dam is full of places worth visiting. Each with its own personality. And sometimes, all it takes to notice is a small boat, a calm afternoon, and a willingness to look.
