The HCG Diet: The Pregnancy Hormone that is Huge in the Weight Loss Industry

When a woman becomes pregnant, the body starts producing a hormone known as HCG (Human Chorianic Gonadotropin). This is the one whose presence in the urine or the blood turns the pregnancy test positive. It is produced by the developing placenta immediately after conception.

The use of HCG diet as a weight loss remedy runs back 6 decades ago to the 1950s. Dr. Albert Simeons, a British endocrinologist observed that injecting the HCG hormone to obese patients combined with a near zero-calorie HCG diet led to weight loss. Though study after study have shown that it is the near-starvation diet (500-calorie-a-day )that does the trick as compared to the HCG hormone, the injections are still being used to date. And so is the HCG diet.

Many believe that the Hormone tricks the body into believing that one is pregnant which in turn increases the metabolic rate of the body. The side effects also are very serious and range from breast tenderness, blood clots, leg cramps, constipation and headaches.
